McEnroe and Lendl to Clash in London

Added on: November 9, 2012

John McEnroe and Ivan Lendl are to clash at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Friday 7th December after the draw for the Statoil Masters Tennis, which runs 5th-9th December, was made.

McEnroe, who won three Wimbledon titles, and former World No.1 Lendl, who now coaches Andy Murray, took part in one of the most intense rivalries the sport has ever known. They played against each other 36 times in their professional careers, with Lendl leading their overall head-to-head 21-15.

In Group A of the Legends event, McEnroe and Lendl were drawn against Jeremy Bates, with Group B featuring the 1987 Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander and Henri Leconte.

In the ATP Champions Tour event, Group A sees Tim Henman and Goran Ivanisevic clashing in a reprisal of the 2001 Wimbledon final, alongside Sweden’s Thomas Enqvist. Group B pits former World No.1 Carlos Moya, making his debut at the event, against the 2003 Wimbledon runner-up Mark Philippoussis and Fabrice Santoro.

The players will also star in doubles competition alongside the ever-popular Mansour Bahrami and Peter McNamara.

On Thursday 6th December, Britain’s Heather Watson will headline Ladies’ Night in a mixed doubles encounter alongside Tim Henman. They will face Anne Keothavong and Mark Philippoussis.

On Saturday 8th December, the Royal Albert Hall will be transformed into an enchanted Winter Wonderland for the Winter Whites Gala in aid of Centrepoint, the charity which supports homeless 16-25 year-olds in the UK. As well as the stars of the tournament, the gala will be attended by Bjorn Borg, Boris Becker and Chris Evert.

The full order of play for the week is detailed below.

Tickets to the Statoil Masters Tennis in the Royal Albert Hall are now available, with prices from £17.50 per person – book here. Alternatively, the Box Office telephone number is +44 (0)20 7070 4404.

The media accreditation system for the Statoil Masters Tennis tournament is now open. To apply, please go to here and type in the password ‘statoilmedia’. The deadline for media accreditation requests is Friday 9th November.

Please note that completing the application form does not guarantee acceptance. Accreditation is awarded at the tournament’s discretion. Please also note that, if accepted, this media accreditation will not be valid for the Winter Whites Gala. Details of media accreditation for the Winter Whites Gala on Saturday 8th December will be released shortly.

The stars of the ATP Champions Tour like to have a laugh when they are on court in the Royal Albert Hall in December, but this year they have started early.

After recording promotional ‘spots’ to announce that they are part of the Statoil Masters Tennis field in London, 5-9 December, the players’ outtakes were edited into a hilarious 60-second, ‘bloopers’ video.
